There are some exceptions. One example is the American Psychological Association style guide (APA). Although this is not an official publication, it’s used often in writing for scientific purposes.

The Associated Press style manual provides some general guidelines for styling numbers. Numbers 10 and higher are identified by the numeral system. Numerology is also used in other locations. The general rule is that the first five numbers you write are “n-mandated”. There are however some outliers.

The Chicago Manual of Technique (above) and the AP Stylebook (below) recommend that numbers be abundant. It’s not to suggest that a stylebook without numbers isn’t possible however. I’m an AP graduate and can verify that there’s a difference.

A stylebook must always be reviewed to determine the ones you’re omitting. For instance it is not a good idea to ignore the letter “t” like the “t”, in “time”.
